If you fancy working in Chiang Mai, there's not a lot of choice...

When we (my wife Helen and me) first came to Chiang Mai I didn't fancy working, even though I hadn't yet retired. I thought it would be good to maybe earn some money though, so I made enquiries and found that getting a work permit in Thailand is not too easy. Generally speaking, the Thai government will not allow foreigners to work at jobs that Thais could do and even business owners have to employ four Thais for every foreign employee.

One notable exception was TEFL, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, but in order to do that, one has to have a degree and a certificate of passing a TEFL course from a certified school.

I thought that maybe I could do this, so I contacted the leading TEFL school, Text and Talk Academy in Chiang Mai and signed up for the course.

Actually, having passed the course, I discovered I didn't like teaching much, so I gave it up and retired, but I can recommend the course for any native English speaker e.g. British, Australian, New Zealand, South African, Canadian or American who wishes to work and teach English Language here. Another plus for the course here is that Text and Talk have teacher supply contracts with many of the government and private schools in Chiang Mai, so newly qualified teachers can very often be found employment opportunities.

To work in a government school, you need to have a degree from a recognised university and a certificate of teaching standards, e.g. T.E.F.L.
