Retiring soon? If you're looking for a great
retirement place,
you've found it!
When my wife and
I came to Thailand for the first time, we were actively thinking about Retirement
here. An old school friend had contacted me on Friends Reunited Website
and invited us to visit him in Thailand, as he had already moved here
at the end of his career.
On a wing and a prayer...
We really had no idea about the country, or where to start looking, so
we went where everyone goes, to the South, to Hua Hin actually. We
found that property prices were more expensive than we had expected and
the choice of housing wasn't attractive to us.
So, on a whim, we hopped on a plane to Chiang
Mai and were immediately impressed by the
friendliness of the people and their willingness to help. We consulted
the internet and immediately found a property developer from England
who had just what we wanted, at the price we wanted.(Have a look at my
page on
houses and land).
You need to monitor
the exchange rate here at the moment. Euros are doing better than
pounds
sterling lately.
Of course, we had to get permission from the Thai authorities to retire
here so we applied for a
retirement visa
from the Royal Thailand Embassy in Cardiff, Wales. Happily, they
granted us a visa, which we have to renew every year, at a
cost of 1,900 baht and we have to report our address to Thai
Immigration every 90 days. We also have to prove our income every year,
to show that we can support ourselves, but apart from that, it's no
problem to retire here in peace and comfort.
Your money
If you're a pensioner as I am and you're planning to draw your pension
here, you'll find that the British government and others have no
arrangement for direct credit with Thai banks. The Pension Service will
send you a cheque of course, which takes a month to clear the Thai
banking system, so I've found the best way is to have it credited to my
UK bank account and draw it via ATM here when I need it.
You're as safe as houses in Chiang Mai...
Chiang Mai is one of the safest cities in the world. You can walk
around the back streets and alleyways (soi) without a moments
apprehension. There are no gangs of feral teenagers roaming the streets
and crime is minimal.
We've been here for seven years now and have enjoyed every moment thus
far. The retirement process here is not difficult and we can heartily
recommend it for those looking for a safe and peaceful situation.
