Chiang Mai is the place to come for cost
effective health and beauty treatments....
When we first came here our dental health was in a
poor state. At that time, in the UK, dentists were opting out of the
NHS and their charges were increasing dramatically. We quickly found a
dental hospital here and soon had our teeth fixed for a fraction of the
cost in the UK. I actually had two root canal fillings and do you know,
it didn't hurt me a bit!
Actually there is a National Health Service in Thailand, but it's only
for Thais really. We
foreigners have to pay for everything, so it's best if you have
insurance, but the cost is a lot less than in the UK and the hospitals
and doctors are excellent and usually speak English. Many people
come here, especially from Europe and the USA, for precisely that
reason and it's not hard to see why. Not only are there good mainline
medical facilities, but there are a lot of health spa and alternative
treatments available here, from Thai massage to colonic
irrigation health treatment.
The
Oasis Spa has several branches and around the city and they
specialise in Traditional Thai massage, Oil massage, herbal steam
baths, body scrub, aromatherapy, the works in fact. You've got to be
tough to stand the Thai massage, but Helen likes the oil and
aromatherapy treatments in particular. I can tolerate the foot
massage, which I find relaxing (in fact I often doze off), but it's not
for everyone and I recommend you ask for a soft massage if it's your
first time. A consolation for us men of course is that all these
treatments are performed by beautiful Thai girls. It's worth the pain
just for that.
Chiang
Mai is now one of the most popular detinations for health tourism,
probably because of its excellent hospitals, low-cost medical
treatment, cheap travel and favourable tourist
infrastructure. English-speaking doctors and nurses are a
requirement in the best hospitals, which also boast the latest
state-of-the-art equipment and the usual Thai superb hospitality.
The
medical tourism in Chiang Mai is an increasing business, catering for
tourists from all over the world, with several excellent hospitals and
clinics. Moreover it’s a relaxed, pleasant and affordable place to
recover in comfort.
Chiang Mai hospitals are
versatile and inexpensive
In my experience Chiang Mai hospitals are extremely versatile and can
treat a huge variety of ailments. The fact that the city is a
well-known fun place to be and that the climate is usually cooler than
Bangkok, are added attractions.
You can usually
arrange an all-in hospital / hotel package at attractive rates if you
wish.
Chiang Mai is surrounded by mountains
which are part of the foothills of the Himalayas. A short car drive
will take you into some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and
a longer drive will take you to the Thailand / Burma border near Chiang
Rai to the North and to Pai and Mae Hong Son in the North-East. If
you're like me, you'll probaly opt to fly to the latter destination,
because the mountain journey can be not too pleasant for those
vulnerable to travel-sickness.
